1. Identify what you are covering
Write down who controls the composition and lyrics, who controls the source recording and whether a recognizable performer identity is involved. Your own rerecording of a composition is different from transforming another party’s master recording.
Rules vary by territory and use. Mechanical licensing can address some composition uses, but it does not automatically authorize copying or transforming a sound recording or using a performer’s identity.
